33. GALLOPING GULCH

The next day, the neighbors gathered to help Sofia and Olimpia get the ranch back in shape after the fire. The girls also got new outfits, since most of their wardrobe had gone up in flames. The work went smoothly. Together, they managed the cleanup and replaced part of the furniture. Don: Tomorrow one of my guys will show up. He’ll replace the rest and fix whatever can still be repaired. He’s a trustworthy Sim, you can count on him. You’ll see, it’ll be like the fire never happened. When Sofia returned to the ranch the next day after dropping Ollie off at school, the “trustworthy Sim” was already there. He was standing at the woodworking table, completely focused on his work. And he was definitely not Don’s age—which was what she had expected. Rancher: Howdy! Sneakin’ around like a little mouse, huh? Almost didn’t notice you there, Miss. Sofia: I didn’t expect you this early. Rancher: I like to start at the crack of dawn. Sofia: Maybe I could make you some coffee? Rancher: Coffee’s al...

32. CATCHING FIRE

After her recent behavior and a serious talk with her parents, Ollie ended up under pretty strict supervision, especially when it came to school stuff. There were lots of bans and quite a few new chores. Most of it was manageable, but she honestly hated cleaning the horse bedding. Everything itched afterward. Sofia would have gladly piled on her a few more chores, but some tasks just aren’t allowed for children. Cleaning and feeding the animals was actually kind of cute. But while shoveling horse manure, Sofia found herself seriously considering hiring some ranch help. Even though Ollie’s new responsibilities took up a lot of her time, she always managed to squeeze in moments to play with Shreeky. Only now she was much more careful not to get caught doing any sneaky mischief. But Prank Day was just around the corner, and something special had to be planned for that one day when even pranks are allowed. Together with Shreeky, they came up with the idea of throwing water balloons at peop...

31. THOUSAND YEARS

The next day they met, as always, for lunch during work. Laura wanted to somehow talk about what she had seen the day before, but she had no idea how to even begin. Bas: You’re awfully quiet today. Laura: I was just thinking… I’m wondering if you’ve thought about starting to see someone again. Bas: See someone? Laura: Yes. I mean, after breaking up with Sofia. It’s been a while. Don’t you miss that closeness with another person? Having someone to share every moment with? Bas: I… I don’t know what to— Laura: Because I miss it. I miss… the warmth, the kisses. That feeling that someone truly cares about me. You know? Bas: Yes. I miss that too. Laura: So… have you thought about it? Bas: About what? Laura: About seeing someone? Bas: Yeah… sometimes I think about it. Laura: Oh. And is there someone specific? Bas: There is one person. What about you? Have you thought about it? Laura: I guess I probably should. Ha! We’re not getting any younger, after all! I think I’ll order something else, I’...
