24. BAD DYNAMICS

Further therapy doesn’t seem to help much.

Bas: How could you say that?! What’s wrong with my hair this time? Is it really that important to you??!!

Sofia: I don’t know why I said that. Well, honestly, you could do something about your hair…

Bas: Today’s session was a total failure. How many more of these are we going to have?

Sofia: I also start to doubt it’s helping us at all. We just end up yelling at each other. Maybe he’s some kind of fraud?

Bas: I’m only going there because I want to stay true to my principles. Deep connections are built on communication.

Sofia: And what do you think I’m doing it for? Because I’m bored?

Olimpia: Mommy, Daddy, no shouty. That’s not nice.

Bas: You’re right, sweetie. Oh, you’re so smart already. My lovely little girl. Come here!

Sofia was cooking, lost in her thought, maybe about their relationship, maybe her nails.

Bas: Then I got into the X-Wing, and guess who was already waiting inside?

Ollie: Duckie!

Bas: Haha, yes, the great Space Duckie. Time to eat, little one. Hey, are you playing with your food again?

Sofia’s missing romance. Passion. She longs for tenderness. But Bastian isn’t in the mood for flirting. Why isn’t it working out for them? Why are they always arguing? Is there a way out of this, one that won’t hurt Ollie?

At least their little daughter is happy. Still looking up to them with trust and fascination.

Ollie: I love you, Mommy.

Sofia: I love you too, my little one.

A million simoleons for the housekeeper’s thoughts ;)

Bas and Sofia went to another therapy session, while Ollie keeps herself busy under the watchful eyes of Rob and Oreo. She learns using the potty. And she’s trying out different kinds of activities.

Like any little kid, she switches games every ten minutes. Until finally, it’s bedtime.

Rob: All right, what have we got here? Dinosaurs.

Ollie: Dinoflogs!

Rob: Close enough. Kind of like big frogs.

Meanwhile, the weather in Ciudad Enamorada reflects the current mood perfectly.

Bas: We’re just arguing more and more in therapy! If it was possible, instead of improving our relationship dynamics, we’d make them worse.

Sofia: Sometimes it takes time before therapy brings positive results.

Bas: No, it’s not working at all. He’s just some con artist. I don’t believe a word about his qualifications.

Sofia: So what then? We just stop going? And then what?

Bas: I don’t know, but this therapy is pointless. We can yell at each other for free at home.

Sofia: And that’s exactly what we keep doing! You think I like this relationship dynamic? That I enjoy what we’re doing to each other? I’d rather do anything than stay stuck in this stalemate!

Bas: So now it’s all my fault? Is that what you’re saying?

Sofia: No, but I just don’t know what to do anymore!!!

Bas: …Me neither.

Sofia: So what now? What do we do if not therapy?

Bas: Maybe we should just…

Bas: It’s obvious we’re making each other miserable. Maybe it’s time to just… stop.

Sofia: What? You want to give up?

Bas: In this situation, it’s probably the smartest thing to do. And the best for everyone.

Bas: We’re not happy, Sofia. We need to face the truth. We can’t keep this going. We’ll only hurt each other more, and we might end up hurting Ollie too.

Sofia: You’re probably right. It’s just… it wasn’t supposed to be like this. It won’t be easy for me to accept it.

Bas: I know. I’m sorry. Really.

Sofia: So this is really the end?

Bas: Looks like it.

Sofia: I guess I’ll go to bed then.

Bas: I’ll sleep on the couch downstairs.

Sofia: All right. Good night.

Bas: Good night.

He couldn’t believe what just happened. That he actually said it out loud. He was thinking about it for a long time, but he wasn't ready to take that step before. The toxicity of their relationship was weighing on them more and more. They reached a point of no return.

And yet, even though he knew it was the right decision, he still felt sorrow over how it ended. With sorrow came numbness. Bastian sat for a long time, just listening to the rain outside. As if even the sky knew that something just broke tonight.

In her room, little Olimpia dreamed of treasure hunts, completely unaware that her world just began to change.
