13. NO WINE WITHOUT WHINING

Filip and Anna are now going for their honeymoon. But do the new acquaintances they’ll meet there really share the same values?

Maja (as usual) woke up very early. And although she quietly entertained herself, soon enough, the entire house was up.

Filip: I have a surprise. I made a few calls here and there and… I rented us a cottage in Tartosa for a few days as part of our honeymoon! You loved it so much there… I thought it was a good idea. We can leave right away.

Anna: Oh! I’ve always wanted to explore this world! You’re wonderful!

Filip: Maja, what do you say to a trip?

Maja: Tip!

Anna: We’ll get dressed quickly, get everything ready, and we’ll head out, okay?

Maja: Maja wedy. Ok?

Willa Sophia in Tartosa greeted them with rain.

Anna: Why does it always rain whenever we come here?

Filip: Oh, it’s just a little drizzle. It’s probably clearing up already.

Maja: Me not like it! Maja is wet!

Luckily (or with the help of Watcher and a weather machine), the weather improved quickly.

Mister Laurent: Welcome! I’m Hector Laurent, and this is my wife, Hilary. The house has already been prepared for you. If you need anything during your stay, just let us know—we live nearby.

Anna: It’s so beautiful here!

Hilary: Yes, we take great care of all our properties.

Filip: And the air is so clean here!

Hector: Hey, if you don’t have plans for this evening, we’re hosting a little carnival party at our winery. We have a son who’s a bit older than your daughter. The kids can play.

Filip: We’d love to join!

Before the evening, the family managed to relax by the pool.

Anna: Alright, now I’m going to sunbathe a bit, and you keep an eye on Maja.

Maja: I want water!

Anna: Daddy will stay with you now while Mommy relaxes, okay?

Maja: Ok!

In the evening, they went to Serena Winery for the Laurents’ carnival party.

Anna: Is this the place?

Hilary: Oh, you’ve arrived… and you’re in costumes…

Filip: Wasn’t this supposed to be a carnival party?

Hilary: Well, yes… but elegant and refined!

Hector: Sorry, we should have mentioned that our parties are always classic—no costumes or silly things.

Anna: And are you sure Maja can play with your son? Won’t that be a problem?

Hilary: Not at all. Let the kids enjoy themselves while the adults have a pleasant evening.

Hilary: Jace, sweetheart, show Maja where you can play.

Jace: …

Filip: Wow, you have an incredible wine selection here!

Hector: Try this—it’s our best vintage.

Filip: Amazing!

Hector: I told you! And it’s for sale. We can agree on a price.

Anna: Oh, here you are.

Filip: Hector is giving us a very decent discount on a few bottles from his vineyard.

Hector: Let your wife try it too, and then you can think it over.

Filip: A few bottles won’t hurt, right?

Even though we didn’t get to observe much, Maja had a pretty fun evening. At least she seemed very happy!

The next day, they started out at the beach, at Club Baia dell’Amore. Maja is such a cheerful child. She feels comfortable everywhere and always manages to find some fun.

Filip: Maja, don’t go into the water alone!

Anna: Maybe we should get out of the sea—look, there are some cool fountains to play with over there.

Filip: Apparently, this club also belongs to the Laurents. Such a fancy place—they have everything here!

Anna: I don’t know what to think of them. They’re a bit… snobbish.

Filip: A table for three, please.

Hilary: Oh, it’s our guests!

Anna: We’ve been at Baia dell’Amore since morning—what an incredible spot.

Hilary: As I said, we take great care of our properties.

Anna: You did say that!

Hector: Have you thought about the wine?

Waiter: May I take your order?

Hector: Bring a bottle of Cranerlet Nuala as well. Maybe that’ll convince them.

Anna: While we wait for the food, why don’t we take a stroll through the vineyard? I’ve never seen one before.

Anna: I read in the guidebook that this well grants wishes!

Filip: Besides, it’s nice to get away for a bit. Hector can be a little much.

Anna: Right? They’re both so strange. Okay, let’s toss in a coin…

Anna: Look! Something’s happening!

Filip: So? What did you wish for?

Anna: Oh no, definitely not this! But Filip, I was right—the Laurents aren’t as upstanding as they seem! The well gave me some information.

Filip: What are you talking about…?

Anna: I’m not sure what I’ll do yet. For now, let’s just act like everything is fine.

Anna: Maja, come on, the waitress is bringing the food.

Filip: Omnomnom. Delicious.

Anna: Really good!

Hector: So, do we have a deal?

Anna: Mr. Laurent, could we speak privately somewhere?

Hector: Of course, step into my office. What is it?

Anna: Well, you probably don’t know this, but I’m a critic…

Hector: A critic? So that’s how it is—you’ve been working undercover?

Anna: Calm down. What I know about your collection doesn’t have to leave this room.

Hector: Blackmail, is it? Fine! Yes, some of our wine is diluted, but it’s still the best! I won’t let you ruin our reputation so easily! How much do you want for your silence?

Filip: What’s going on?

Anna: Let’s skip buying the wine. Thanks to the well, I found out that the Laurents have fake llama antiques in their collection. But as soon as I mentioned I’m a critic, he assumed culinary, not art! And he outright admitted to diluting their wine for sale! Now I’ll pretend to write something about their restaurant, and let’s get out of here.

Filip: I feel weird. I think I got food poisoning.

Anna: Oh no, do you think they’ve been tampering with the food too?

Filip: Hello? I’d like to file a complaint. I got food poisoning at your restaurant!

...They refunded the cost of the meal.

Anna: At least there’s that!
